Our History

It all started in 1939, when two brothers, Lawrence and Paul Berend entered into business together without a hand shake. They started out hauling hay from Pilot Point, TX to Windthorst, TX and selling it for $9 a ton. They used an old store belonging to Paul’s mother in law where they started selling feed.

Eventually 10 acres were purchased, where the present Windthorst store is located. Only 4 years after opening the first store a second store was opened in the neighboring town of Archer City, TX in 1943, and then a third on Bridge Street in Wichita Falls, TX in 1946. As their business grew the two brothers entered into the broiler business in 1951 and opened a processing plant in Wichita Falls. Due to the modernization and integration the two switched from broilers to laying hens, which marketed about 74 million eggs in each 65-week laying cycle. Then in 1960 the company added sheep, mainly because the grounds around the laying houses were grown up in weeds, but ended up with over a thousand head and a successful sheep operation.

In 1971, a fourth store was opened in Burkburnett, TX and 5 years later, store five opened on Seymour Highway in Wichita Falls. The last store in Bowie, TX opened in 1982.

The company didn’t stop there. They had a hog farm, which grew to be one of largest in the state of Texas. Along with hogs, there was also a working cattle feedlot, which saw about 3000 new head of cattle each year. In 1989 the two brothers, Lawrence and Paul Berend retired and let the second generation continue on the Berend Bros. legacy.

The chicken plant eventually closed in 2004 as well as the hog farm and feedlot.

October 2014 celebrated 75 years in business for the Berend Bros. company. The company now stands with stores in Windthorst, Wichita Falls (Jacksboro Highway), Bowie, Olney, and Megargel, TX.
